Academic Overview
Program Overview
The Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) is an undergraduate allied healthcare program that prepares students for professional work in clinical laboratory science. Medical laboratory investigations contribute to the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of disease. The program develops knowledge and practical competencies in laboratory testing, specimen handling, quality systems, biosafety, professional ethics and communication with healthcare teams.

Professional Skills
Competencies and Learning Outcomes
On successful completion, graduates are expected to develop competencies appropriate to their training and supervised scope of practice, including the ability to:
Explain the scientific principles underlying common clinical laboratory investigations.
Collect, identify, transport, receive and process specimens according to approved procedures.
Perform laboratory procedures under the required level of supervision and follow standard operating procedures.
Operate laboratory equipment responsibly and follow maintenance and troubleshooting protocols within their competence.
Apply internal quality control, quality assurance and accurate record-keeping practices.
Follow biosafety, infection prevention, biomedical waste management and emergency procedures.
Maintain confidentiality, ethical conduct and professional communication.
Interpret and communicate laboratory information within the limits of professional training and institutional protocols.
Participate in teamwork, continuous learning and research-oriented practice.
Practical Training and Internship
Practical training is central to the BMLS pathway. Students should gain supervised experience in laboratory methods, equipment use, specimen workflow, quality practices, safety and professional conduct. The NCAHP curriculum describes a four-year program including a compulsory one-year internship, with clinical laboratory postings and a research dissertation represented in the final two semesters.
Chirayu should confirm the approved internship calendar, posting departments, clinical partner sites, supervisor requirements, logbook / competency sign-off process, attendance rules and dissertation requirements with the affiliating university and the current official curriculum.
